The sector of mines and quarries plays a fundamental role in the economic development of Africa. Around two-thirds of the continent’s countries concentrate mining activities and more than half produce ore for the international market. Alone, it can represent up to 25% of the GDP of a State. Due to the growing demand in metal from emerging countries (doubling of the urban population in   30 years, infrastructure development at a sustained pace), future prospects of the sector are promising. In Burkina Faso, the additional need in human resources by 2018 is estimated at 472 engineers, 444 superior technicians and 1420 supervisors.

In the perspective of a sustainable growth of their activities, mining companies are increasingly looking for solutions and for a specialized labor force, in the management of social and environmental impacts linked to their activities: pollution, population displacement, etc.

Created in this perspective, the Advanced Master’s Program in Sustainable Management of Mines (6-years university degree) aims at training professionals capable of identifying, assess and minimize environmental impacts of quarries and mines. This training program allows the acquisition of solid knowledge in the following areas:

  • Sustainable management of exploitation sites.
  • Economy and entrepreneurship in the mining sector
  • Geo sciences and ore extraction and transformation process.

The Advanced Master’s Degree in Sustainable Management of Mines allows the acquisition, within a year, an expertise with vocational orientation. 50 % of the training program is given by experienced speakers, from mining organisms or companies (ESSAKANE, Chamber of Mines from Burkina Faso). They provide the Master’s program with the field reality and requirements and participate to the improvement of the educational reference materials. A compulsory work placement of 4 months in included in the curriculum. Other scientific and university partners such as the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL), the University of Sciences and Technology of Kumasi (KNUST), the University of Tuskegee (USA) bring their educational expertise.

Learning outcomes

The Advanced Master’s Degree in Sustainable Management of Mines allows the acquisition of the following competences:

  • Capacity to assess risks linked to the mining exploitation of a given site
  • Capacity to deal with and/or minimize risks when they arise (mining waste, mine water, air emissions, etc.).
  • Master the legislation and the ore economy framework.
  • Use environmental assessment tools and carry out the environmental audit of a quarry or a mining site.
  • Implement policies of Hygiene, Security, Environment (HSE).

  • Head of environmental follow-up in mining industries and quarries or responsible for the hygiene security environment.
  • Consultant in specialized research departments.
  • Environment and sustainable development manager in administrations dealing with mines and quarries.

Entry level and admission requirements

The Master’s program in sustainable management of Mines is open to:

  • Students who hold a Master’s degree or engineer degree in the areas of civil engineering, water, environment, energy, geo sciences and chemistry.
  • Students who hold a 4-year university degree with a professional experience of minimum 3 years in the same areas (Accreditation of prior and experiential learning).

Students are selected upon consideration of their applications, according to the level of initial training and the relevancy of their professional project.

Teaching Modalities

  • Private: 5335 Euros / 3 500 000 F CFA.
  • Companies, States: 6 400 Euros / 4 200 000 F CFA.

Travel expenses and accommodation are not included. A payment schedule in four installments exists to facilitate payment.  There are grants, subsidies and credit funding solutions.

Studies Organization

The training program takes place in a year (of which 4 months of work placement).  The training program is based on 5 main pillars.

  • Knowledge of the economic context of the mining sector in Africa.
  • Acquisition of fundamental competences in geo sciences and ore extraction and transformation processes
  • Acquisition of specific competences for the management of site under exploitation.
  • A practical and vocational training with at least 50 % of modules provided by professionals from the sector and a 4-month work placement.

The training program is based on an active teaching methodology, which included theoretical learning, case studies, field visits on exploitation site, practical work sessions, supervised by professionals and a ten-day immersion on a mining site in order to grasp in practical ways environmental issues of a mining exploitation. The promotion 2012-2013 thus benefited from a one-week immersion on a site of ESSAKANE (Burkina Faso).

Upon their arrival in 1st year, students are welcome at the airport by the school welcome and integration unit. They are accompanied in the regular paperwork and receive a welcome pack.

Work placement

A 4-month work placement in a company is compulsory and is validated by the dissertation viva in front of a jury made up of professionals and teachers.

The training program is organized in 7 Course Units (60 ECTS). The total number of hours is 660 hours including practical work sessions and tutorials. Details of the Course Units are as follows :

  • Mining activities: fundamental knowledge (42h)
  • Mining process engineering (114h)
  • Legal and economic context (54h)
  • Quality hygiene and security (60h)
  • Geosciences (60h)
  • Environment Management (66h)
  • Protection and rehabilitation of mining sites(42h)
  • Environment Science (66h)
  • Industrial water treatment (72h)
  • Energetic Concept (36h)
  • Data Base (48h)

Each course unit is subdivided in modules, such as for instance the study of environmental aspects of mining exploitation, the environmental impact of a mine, environmental audit or the sustainable rehabilitation of mining sites.
